Dear Aviva,

I’ve been invited to a co-worker’s wedding. My understanding is that people generally write a check to the bride and groom, but I was planning on giving some beautiful artwork I found in Neve Tzedek. Is that acceptable?

Pondering Presents

Dear Pondering,

Ever heard the expression “When in Rome?” Well, when in Israel, do as the Israelis do, sometimes. I’m not suggesting you start saying “shrimps” or closing your business at random hours in the middle of the day, but you should probably just write your co-worker a check this time.

The exception to this rule is if it is a close friend getting married, and you either are sure they would prefer a gift or comfortable enough to ask.

As a side-note, when anywhere, artwork is risky - People don’t always have the same taste. I know writing a check might seem odd to you, but trust me, it will be welcome.

And... this is totally the icing on the cake of this post... if you are not sure how much to write that check for, check this out.

Best,

Aviva
